“Our futile attempts to preserve memories against the tide of time and the transience of the collection* in the face of nature is a subject of Alan Magee’s installation “Im/permanent Recollection” in the South gallery. Recording the majesty and domination of nature is a common Romantic artistic aim, here unsettled by the modern concrete white cube. The dramatic and fleeting sea and sky-scapes which are looped to pull day and night backwards and forwards, throws into perspective the insignificance of mankind. The sense of the theatrical is heightened by the harsh, monumental concrete cubes whose swirls and stains correspond to the gallery floor. They are hollow props, destined for consignation into oblivion.” – Curator Pippa Little
